The Flag is at Half Mast

By Wm. Willing
Boston: Oliver Ditson & co., [1865?]

The Flag Is at Halfmast
The flag is at halfmast,
With black in deep mourning,
There's sad news of life's lost,
Rebellion triumphing!
The President of the Free States
Shot down in cold blood,
By a traitor who underrates
The designs of our God.
Ye sons of the brave--
Freedoms creation
Stand firm now, and save
This country from separation;
Separated we fall,
"E Pluribus unum"
One died for all
Let all stand like one!
Let all stand like one,
One died for all,
One died like all,
Oh! lord of hosts we pray thee,
Take him, keep us in safety,
Thy name be prais'd,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy glory evermore,
Thy glory evermore.

Our flag floats at halfmast,
Our chief goes to heaven,
His friends all feel downcast,
Oh could we have saved him!
The nations Best has gone to rest,
A martyr for freedom,
The Lord knows what we need, best,
What he does, is well done!
The two men of great fame,
Lincoln and Washington,
The world knows but one name
Who's above those alone.
The murderers cry
"Sic semper tirannis"
Is a base lie
We need naught like this
For one stands for all,
All stand for one,
God's wisdom, love and power
Is still the mighty tower,
Our flag is rais'd,
His name be prais'd!
Our trust is in the Lord,
Amen, Amen, Amen.
